Here’s one of those odd and surprising little stories: On Sunday in Helena, Ark., one of the last known surviving widows of a Confederate soldier, Maudie Cecilia Hopkins, died at age 93. Check out this little history, courtesy of the Baxter Bulletin:
In 1934 at age 19, Hopkins married William M. Cantrell, an 86-year-old Confederate veteran. Cantrell had served in the 7th Virginia Infantry and first hired her to cook for him and do his laundry, according to a Monday article published in The Washington Times. As he aged, he asked her to move in with him, but she declined. He suggested they marry and said he would deed his house and lot to her, according to The Washington Times. He died three years later.
