Arkansas Project flashback, featuring JB.
Sometime in the last seven days, liberal columnist John Brummett apparently discovered that the lieutenant governor’s office employs staff. To Brummett, this is scandalous because former LG Mark Darr resigned at the end of last week. The “office” of LG is now vacant.
One problem with Brummett’s outrage, however: Senator Michael Lamoureux will be performing the duties of the LG’s office, in addition to performing his Senate duties. So you would think that, if the staff helped the LG do work relevant to his position prior to the Darr resignation, then the staff is obviously also capable of helping the new officeholder do work that is relevant to his position after the Darr resignation — and that Senator Lamoureux may in fact need even more assistance running the office, since he will also be performing legislative duties. Granted, the duties of the LG’s office are limited unless the governor is out of the state, but if it’s a scandal for Lamoureux to have staff, why wasn’t it a scandal for Darr, Halter, Rockefeller, and all other lieutenant governors to have staff? Where has Brummett’s outrage been all these years?
To state the obvious: suddenly discovering an outrage — that the office has employees! — suggests that the Brummett’s perspective is feigned, selective, and tactical.
